Perfector
A press which is capable of printing both sides of the sheet in a
single pass through the press. This is accomplished in one of two
ways. The first method used in sheetfed presses is two print the
sheet on one or more units then a perfecting unit tumbles the sheet over
and the sheet is printed on the opposite side on the following unit(s).
This technique is similar to those use by copiers and printers with
duplexing capabilities. The second method, most commonly used on web
(roll fed) presses, is to print both sides of the sheet simultaneously
with printing units above and below the paper as it passes through the
press. This is commonly called blanket-to-blanket perfecting.
Heatset
A heatset web press is one that uses rapid heating and then cooling to
dry the ink on the paper. Because of the high speeds of web presses
this forced drying is required to keep the ink from smearing and marking
as it passes through the folder at the end of the press. Heatset is
required to print on coated paper and produces much cleaner product on
uncoated papers. The most common example of non-heatset printing are
newspapers, this is why even days after a newspaper is printed it will
leave ink on your fingers from handling.
Many sheetfed press are equipped with dryers usually infrared or UV.
These type of dryers simply heat the sheet in order to speed up the normal
drying process of conventional offset inks and are not considered to be
heatset.
